I went to the mall last week. There wasn’t a soul in sight, other than the folks that work there. I went to a stand and purchased a couple of items for WELL below the sticker price. The lady working the stand said her sales were really low and the owners wonders what she does all day. I replied that gas is too high so people do not have the money to buy anything outside of food. The merchant stated “gas is going to go back down”. From what I remembered from the last 2 gas price surges, that will not happen.
The stimulus deal that resulted in many Americans receiving a check to go spend in stores did not have the outcome our government hoped for. 67% of the Americans that answered a poll on what they spent the money on said either bills or gas. Taxi cab fares have hiked in every major city due to the gas surge and public transportation is not prepared to handle all of the new riders. People still braving the high gas prices are pumping less gas, and in turn many people are running out of gas while in transit. If you live more that 10 miles from your job, it is almost not worth going to work.
Being mediocre is no longer acceptable in the transportation business. The UPS – DHL merger looks like it will result in a massive sweep of lay offs, which includes the DHL sorting hubs losing roughly 6,100 jobs. The people losing their jobs are area farmers working there for health coverage.
Where did we go wrong? This war we are in was suppoed to help our people back here, not hurt them.
I posted about how hard it is to find a job that is not in danger due to the present state of our economy awhile back. This is not a situation that will resolve itself.
