Hoping to capitalize off of the popularity of films like “300″ and “Sin City” and the the explosion of families scattering from relatives houses after being holed up Christmas Day. Sadly, the studio did not give the general public a nice gift on Christmas day.
Down these mean streets a man must come. A hero born, murdered, and born again. When a Rookie cop named Denny Colt returns from the beyond as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face who has other plans. He’s going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this cold hearted killer from the city’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill the masked crusader.
From IMDB
This movie had all of the potential of the Batman movies. Essentially the main character cannot die (again). The “Spirit” is the soul of the city and can be labeled as a more attractive “Dead Pool”. The script was extremely repetitive, the only interesting parts of the movie was when Samuel L. Jackson dressed up as Hitler (do NOT ask), and the shots of the beautiful villains (Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johanssen). Even the premise that the “Spirit” and the villain are connected through a special serum injected in the both them making them almost immortal did not get me into the movie. The villains are after a golden fleece and a vase of blood. The fleece is for the female villain to have something she always dreamed of. The vase of blood is so that the transformation into immortality can be achieved by the Octopus. Yawn.
Everyone connected to this film should be ashamed of themselves. I can appreciate a studio duping the movie going audience into see a bad film by releasing trailers that make the movie seem interesting (and VERY Dick Tracy-esque), but to release this film on Christmas should have been illegal.
This movie flat out disappointed not only the people I saw this movie with, but the ENTIRE audience. Seriously, people left before the credits screaming “this movie sucked!”
