Happy New Year….

racism

Sadly we have the same ole drama
As the new year rang in Fox allowed a comment to scroll across the bottom of the screen that references the “Magic Negro” song.

For those that have no idea what I am talking about, watch this

I have heard people say this is not a big deal, and talk about how people talk about other political figures the same way. This is not true. If you talk about how stupid Bush is, you talk about that based on his actions. When you make songs like this, you are talking about the color of a man’s skin. If racism is not alive and well then songs like these would not be “comical” to people. To make songs like these you have to believe that someone is inferior based on their skin color ALONE.

Although this song is being labeled as a “parody” , which the actual ACT of changing the words of the song IS. However, if you look at the meaning of parody

A parody (pronounced [ˈpɛɹədiː] US, [ˈpaɹədiː] UK, also called send-up), in contemporary usage, is a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, or author, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation.

further definition of the word “parody” goes on to say this…

As the literary theorist Linda Hutcheon (2000: 7) puts it, “parody … is imitation with a critical difference, not always at the expense of the parodied text.” Another critic, Simon Dentith (2000: 9), defines parody as “any cultural practice which provides a relatively polemical allusive imitation of another cultural production or practice.”

Parody may be found in art or culture, including literature, music (although “parody” in music has a rather wider meaning than for other art forms), and cinema. Parodies are sometimes colloquially referred to as spoofs or lampoons.

But, if the song states things that are NOT practices of a culture, but plays on negative racial stereo types, it can no longer have the protection of being called a “parody”.

I understand that the comment on Fox news was supposed to be tongue in cheek, but it was tasteless….just as tasteless as the original content it came from.
