What were they thinking? (movie related)

Every year, when the temperature starts to hit averages above freezing the move studios bless us with a surge of new releases. We have had two major hits with “Watchmen” and “Last House on the Left” one major atrocity with the “Street Fighter- Legend of Chun Li” movie. After the Chun Li movie I figured the worse was over…obviously not the case.
Enter the Dragon Ball movie..

This movie has “waste of time and energy” all over it. Sadly in Asia they flocked to go see it…

Asian Opening Weekend Box Office Mar 15th, 2009 Dragonball Evolution opened to $10.1 million dollars in Asia this weekend, premiering at No.1 in China, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore. At No. 4, Fox’s “Dragonball Evolution” premiered in eight Asian markets before its April 8 domestic opening. Director James Wong’s live-action adaptation of the famous Japanese cartoon series created by Akira Toriyama co-stars Justin Chatwin and Chow Yun-fat and drew $10.1 million from 2,110 screens. Following heavy prerelease promotion in the region, it premiered at No. 1 in China, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore. The China opening tally, $3.4 million from 855 locales, was Fox’s fourth-highest weekend opening in the market. “Dragonball’s” No. 2 Japan bow produced $3.3 million from 540 screens.

The cast includes Chow Yun-Fat of “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” fame. Honestly, his agent needs to be shot. His performance in this movie was lacking. Chow obviously just did it for the money.

Dare I say this movie is worse than the Chun Li movie? I am not sure if it is worse to make a movie that has nothing to do with the characters they are names after, or for them to loosely stick to the story line and make the movie more “campy” and not a good translation at all. Not sure, my 8 year old liked the movie though…maybe I should have allowed him to write this review. Anyway, if you want to see a movie using chi or elemental powers, I suggest “Storm Riders”
